Injury to worker's hand may demonstrate need for more NEBOSH courses

A food factory worker was injured after his hand became trapped in machinery, which has resulted in a fine for the company.

The 22-year-old employee was cleaning machinery when his hand became stuck between the rollers of a cooling conveyor.

However, the equipment was not fitted with guards, which resulted in the mixing operative's right hand becoming trapped in the moving machine and suffering serious injuries.

The Baked Snacks Co, based in Middlesbrough, pleaded guilty to failing to ensure its workers had received proper training before working with equipment and not taking action to prevent access to moving parts. The company was fined £2,400 by Teesside Magistrates' Court.

Health and Safety Executive inspector Bruno Porter said: "Simple, standard guarding of a dangerous piece of machinery should have been in place to prevent this nasty accident."

In 2008-09, 2.5 million working days were lost across the manufacturing industry due to injury at work or work-related ill health.
