A firm has been fined after one of its workers suffered multiple injuries after being crushed in equipment.
David Jones, who worked for S Cartwright and Sons (Coachbuilders), in Broadheath near Altrincham, was helping to move seven-metre-long metal strips onto a trailer when the stack and the lifting beam fell on top of him.
As a result Mr Jones suffered injuries including a broken back, 12 broken ribs, a punctured lung and a bruised heart, something that may help to promote the importance of working safely courses.
The firm was fined £15,000 plus costs by Manchester Crown Court, with HSE inspector Richard Clarke stating: "At the time of the incident, it did not provide suitable training or written guidance for its staff to handle long loads."
According to the statistics released by the industry body, 1.2 million people in the UK during 2008-09 stated that they were suffering from an illness which they believe was either caused by or made worse as a result of their job.
