An international waste management firm has been fined after one of its workers was killed by a falling recycling bin.
NEBOSH courses are an essential part of health and safety training and can help to prevent incidents such as the one which saw worker David Ives lose his life.
The 56-year-old from High Wycombe was collecting waste from outside a pub in Easington, near Aylesbury, when the 1,100-litre bin fell from the hoist of the recycling lorry and landed on his head.
Aylesbury Crown Court fined the company £130,000 plus costs for not taking due care to ensure its workers were not exposed to such risks.
Dennis MacWilliam, Health and Safety Executive (HSE) inspector, said that if the hoists on the vehicle had been maintained the incident would not have happened.
For the year 2008-09, the HSE has provisionally stated that 180 people died as a result of workplace injuries.
Brian Currie Milton Keynes, a second company which was also on trial, was found not guilty by the court.
