NEBOSH courses news: Bottle firm fined after worker injured in fall

Category: NEBOSH National General Certificate
Friday 5th of February 2010

An employee in a bottle factory was seriously injured after he fell two metres onto a concrete floor.

While carrying out maintenance work at the factory in Hunslet, Leeds, the man lost his footing and fell through a three-metre wide gap onto the floor below.

The space was created to allow equipment to be passed up using a block and tackle pulley system and had been left open while the repair team took a break, a detail which may surprise students on NEBOSH courses.

He suffered fractures to his back and skull, plus bruising to his brain and kidneys. He has been unable to return to work since the incident in January 2009.

Allied Glass Containers was fined £10,000 and ordered to pay costs by Leeds Magistrates.

In an attempt to raise awareness of the dangers posed by slips, trips and falls in the workplace, the Health and Safety Executive is currently running the Shattered Lives campaign. Over 100,000 people suffered a serious injury at work as a result of a fall.
