A local council has joined forces with the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to create a new initiative to make working on industrial estates safer.
Occupational health and safety NVQ 3 courses may see a rise in applications following the report that the drive is set to focus on areas including working at height and controlling workplace transport.
The industry body and Hartlepool Council are also set to carry out a series of inspections on industrial sites in the area over the next two weeks to ensure that safety standards are being met.
HSE inspector Jonathan Wills said that special attention is to be paid to how asbestos is managed and what the practice is for using ladders and if they are safe, since 35 workers died in 2008-09 as a result of a fall from height.
This new programme also ties in with the HSE's Shattered Lives campaign, which is offering employees the chance to fill in a simple questionnaire through the group's website to find out how they can best improve their own working environment.
