A gas fitter has been fined after it was found that he illegally fitted a gas heating boiler, with many potentially dangerous defects later found.
NEBOSH course students may already be aware of the risks that are associated with poorly installed gas devices, including the possibly fatal threat of carbon monoxide and the fact that a low oxygen supply could cause an explosion.
James O'Neill, originally from Burnage in Manchester, fitted a boiler at a property in Grimsby, despite not being industry registered. When the work was checked out by the gas registration board it was found to have several faults with it.
Grimsby Magistrates' Court fined Mr O'Neill £2,000 plus costs following an investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE).
Gareth Lewis, an HSE inspector, said: "We urge homeowners to be on their guard when having gas work carried out at their properties and to always check the fitter is on the Gas Safe Register."
He also issued a warning to unregistered gas fitters that the body would not hesitate to prosecute those carrying out work illegally.
