A Stockport company has been fined after one of its employees was scarred for life when his legs were set on fire.
The unnamed worker was injured when the paint thinner he was pouring on a fire to help it to ignite caused an explosion, which suggests that NEBOSH courses or similar training services are vital to fully educate workers.
Trafford Magistrates' Court heard that Rust Proofing Company (Manchester) regularly allowed its employees to light fires around cast-iron radiators in order to speed up the removal of power coatings.
A fine of over £1,003 and costs of £2,997 were imposed on the company for not taking adequate care of its staff.
Health and Safety Executive inspector Philip Strickland said: "It's disturbing that this company needed something like this to happen before taking action to improve safety."
In related news, international waste management firm Veolia was recently fined following a fire at its Preston plant, which forced parts of two motorways to be shut.
